Wrong Keyboard

Gave the wrong keyboard only to be told they didn't have the one i ordered in stock. I paid a hefty customs fee/brokers fee with no update from the company. The keyboard they sent also cost less. So appropriately, I was scammed.

Great ideas, too many kinks to iron out

The Cloud Nine ErgoTKL has, on paper, a lot of good ideas going for it. I would have really liked to love it, however, I encountered a plethora of kinks in the actual implementation of that idea, that I went for a return/refund.

The keyboard's backlight has a strong pink/purple hue when set to white. Support told me that this could be due to the Cherry Brown mechanical switches, but even the dial in the middle has that pink/purple hue, so that can't be the issue here.

The keyboard has two sets of feet to tilt it backwards. One by 4 degrees, one by 7 degrees. The set for 4 degrees is so unstable, that the feet fold in on the slightest pull towards the user.

The keyboard has an extensive "ping" (the high-pitched metallic resonance sound, probably from the switch springs). I assume that the keyboard is plate mounted (as opposed to gasket mounted), and the metallic underbody is hollow, which magnifies the problem. My recommendation would be for the next iteration of this board to switch to a gasket mount and add dampening material.

The software to configure the keyboard does not look all too pretty, and is not the most pleasant or intuitive to use. On top of that, it is not available for Mac.

There are a few further smaller kinks. Not all keys are reassignable, most notably the Fn key. The knob is also not freely programmable, and only supports four preconfigured modes that can't be changed. The knob modes also don't all work on Mac. The backlight doesn't stay turned off when turned off; every time the PC starts (or comes out of hibernation), the backlight turns back on. When tilted to 7 degrees, there is a bit of a wobble.

Lastly, it would be great if this keyboard was more customizable. The switches are soldered, and I would like to see hotswappable ones. It's also not particularly easy to find alternative keycaps, since the space bars have an odd size. Most split layouts like Alice have 2.25u and 2.75u space bars, this one has a different size that I have not seen in custom keycap sets.

For all the aforementioned kinks and areas of improvement, the keyboard seems significantly overpriced. I have now settled for a Feker Alice 80, which is significantly cheaper and has solved most of the issues mentioned in this review.

I really hope the Cloud Nine team will take this review to heart and iterate on their product. The ideas behind the ErgoTKL are great, and I see a huge potential.

Really great, one change needed

Clickiness, performance, all good things. The lights could be a bit brighter, but it's fine. The dial is great, I enjoy the programmable buttons, and the magnets make it snap together really well. All good things!

One change needed - there's a metallic *ping* noise somewhere behind the board that NEEDS CORRECTION. It's not okay. It's on both halves, on every keystroke, and while not loud it's quite annoying. I wasn't brave enough to remove the board, but if it keeps annoying me that's exactly what I'll do. It's not annoying enough to return in... But it's close.

Happy
Love it, replaced my previously loved split keyboard after two months of use

I have been using another brand split keyboard for years. More expensive. I needed a replacement and so thought I'd try this. I've been using it for two months now and I'm super happy.

It's a little loud, but it is a nice solid clacky/clunky keyboard loud, not an annoying clicky sound. As I type this I am enjoying the sournd.

Reasonable position adjustment and nice palm rests.

The wheel is a nice bonus. I thought it would be a gimic but it is actually pretty useful. I just wish change the function was easier. FN+click is hard to do with one hand, so it requires alot of movement with the second hand, plus the need to click multiple times to cycle through the the settings makes it more frustrating. Would some small dedicated buttons.

Stronger connection and stands

This keyboard checks many boxes for me. Large pads, extra shortcut keys, big dialler. Clever wheel functions. Kill switch to off all lights. Signal lights in middle so I know what mode it’s on. You can now pick and hear different keyboard clicks from MX Cherry off its main website. It shipped really fast considering I am not based in USA.

The generous palm pads have a premium feel. It is thick and comfy. But can move a little due to the velcro. Not a problem since they are removable depending on your preference.

Main problem is easily loose USB C connection that can DC during cleaning or adjustments. The workaround is to move this keyboard with care and gentle motion. I wished the USB cables are double sided or at least replaceable so if my dog bites it I could have it replaced easily. While there is spare key caps and key puller. I hoped there is spare back stands as they are in cheap plastics that can break. And mine did break. I should mention the company did not want to calculate shipping fees for me. Seem like they only want to service US customers but have put their product on Amazon.

There is 2 stands on each side. In there are 2 smaller kick stands to provide another angle. In all the keyboard provides up to 3 typing angles. However only the larger (main stand) holds well. The smaller one has no lock mechanism and occasionally collapse.

Overall this keyboard will get 4 stars if it can improve on the hardware weaknesses mentioned.

This takes some using to, for example I kept mistyping for first few days. That being said I am surely enjoying this pricey designer looking keyboard. It lets people know you are serious and takes your work ergonomics in high regard! Lol. Plus, it is a joy to look at. Nice form, color pattern, software and packaging. Good job CloudNine nailing down the design aspects and incorporating smart elements into a modern day ergonomic mechanical customizable keyboard.
